The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Othman Jerandi started on June 2nd 2022 a two-day working visit to Japan.
He met with a delegation including heads of KEIDANREN (Japan Business Federation), Keizai Doyukai (Japan Association of Corporate Executives) and JAIDA (Japan-Africa Infrastructure Development Association) and managers of Japanese enterprises operating in Tunisia .
The meeting offered the opportunity to listen to the proposals of representatives of the Japanese private sector to scale up investments as Tunisia is gearing up to host the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) next August 27-28.
The private sector, the FM said, has a key role to play in boosting economic cooperation. He called for further diversifying partnership and increasing investments in high-added-value sectors, mainly renewable energy, infrastructure, health and startups.
Mr. Jerandi urged, in this vein, intensification of meetings between Tunisian businessmen and investors and their Japanese counterparts and exploring new frameworks to shed further light on the climate of investment in both countries. To this end, the possibility of putting in place a business council on the occasion of TICAD 8 will be considered.
The summit will be an opportunity for Japanese companies and businessmen to share experiences and explore new areas of cooperation, the FM added. Tunisia is eying a number of economic reforms to lure foreign investors and boost post-COVID-19 growth.
With its geographic location and membership in regional economic groupings, Tunisia can be a gate for European, African and Arab markets.
Japanese economic actors said they take keen interest in Tunisia as a promising investiment destination in the Southern Mediterranean. A host of investment opportunities are available, particularly in pharmaceuticals, energy, IT and the car component industry.
